Councillors urged to summon police chief

YOGYAKARTA: Representatives from eight local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) came to the City Council on Thursday, demanding that councillors summon the city police chief over several major unsolved cases.

The cases include the murder of journalist Fuad Mohammad Syafruddin alias Udin (1996), the attempt to burn Masjid Gedhe mosque (1999), and the Sardjito Hospital bombing (2000).

"The police's capability in handling major cases are questionable. They don't seem to be serious and (the process) is not transparent," Budi Santoso, chairman of Yogyakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH) told the Council's deputy speaker Totok Daryanto. (swa/hdn)
