Councillors misuse state vehicles

TANGERANG: Almost 70 percent of the 702 vehicles owned by Tangerang regency administration have been misused by the councillors for their political parties or for private purposes.

"Based on our investigation and the report from my subordinates, those vehicles' registration numbers have been changed from state to private," said the head of administration of the transportation division, Machfud Rosyad, on Saturday.

Previously, the move to change the registration number was merely due to security considerations, because many state vehicles had been the primary target of people running amok. However, the practice has been changed and returned to its original state.

Tangerang Regent, Agus Djunara, complained that it had been difficult to stop such abuse by councillors. However, he said, he could only promise to cooperate with the police in an effort to stop the practice in future. -- Antara
