Council speaker named a suspect

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Banyumas Council Speaker Tri Waluyo has been named a suspect in an alleged attempt to foil a disputed land execution and an assault on the execution official.

Banyumas Police Chief Lt. Col. Imam Basuki said investigators had obtained sufficient evidence to name Tri as a suspect in the case.

He said that the speaker could be sentenced to between three and five years jail.

The case centers around local prosecutors' plan to seize a disputed plot of land on Jl. A. Yani on May 22. Tri was reported to have abetted the attack on the official who tried to seize the land.

Tri, who is head of the Banyumas chapter of the Indonesian Democratic Party for Struggle (PDI-Perjuangan), has denied the allegations saying that his presence at the site was requested by the people residing on the land. (45/bby)
