'Corrupt staff make for poor service'
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said yesterday that unscrupulous employees at city administration offices have worsened services to the public.
"This non-technical factor is obstructing our efforts to improve services to the public," he said in his opening speech at a seminar on human resources improvement at City Hall yesterday.
The governor cited expensive and inefficient services as well as a bureaucracy with weaknesses which slow public services.
Surjadi said that complicated and bureaucratic services in the administration are intentionally created by several officers who purposely take advantage of the situation.
"The system is not complicated. But several people make it complicated because they enjoy financial profits from the situation they create," Surjadi said, adding that such deceitful employees have no aptitude to serve the public.
"The problem looks insignificant, but it is indeed annoying and disturbing many people."
Surjadi warned the employees not to continue with their foul play, and to start improving services for the sake of the people."I know it is not easy for them to stop their habits."
He said simple and quick services are important to enable the city administration to compete with other cities in the Asia Pacific region when trade liberalization begins.
Therefore, those who cannot cope with this reality should step aside. (yns)
