Convenience may not be the answer

'ATM Bersama' (multicard automatic teller machines) is not a solution for banks that want to have lots of ATMs for very little cost. It is true that customers of participating banks can withdraw money at any ATM but it may backfire in terms of customer service.

I am a customer of Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) and I was automatically issued with a Moneylink ATM card. Since SCB is a member of ATM Bersama, I can use my card at any ATM Bersama except two ATMs owned and operated by SCB.

Recently, I withdrew money from Bank Dagang Negara's ATM Bersama using my Moneylink card. The transaction was not processed and I did not receive any money but an amount was still deducted.

I filed a complaint with SCB. Fortunately, the bank is quite professional and its staff settled the matter in a short time. The amount missing from my bank account was credited.

Nevertheless, it affected SCB's service to customers. As a foreign bank, SCB should have a service of international standards.

I am wondering whether SCB supplies a similar service to its customers in Jakarta as it does in Hong Kong and Singapore.
