Conservationists breed butterflies

PALU, Central Sulawesi: The Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) here is breeding two species of rare butterflies which can only be found in this province, Antara reported.

The head of Central Sulawesi's BKSDA, Edi Purwanto, said here Saturday the two species belong to the Papilo Iswara group which have red and yellow wings and live in the highlands.

He said the two species of butterflies were being bred in the highlands in Palolo district, located 1,200 meters above sea level. He also said the insects were protected under Law No. 5, 1990.

The agency had noted the existence of 19 species of protected animals in Central Sulawesi, including babi rusa (Babyrousa babirussa) and the anoa (Buballus quarlesi).
