Condemned circumcision?

This is in response to the letter of Melly R. titled "Political Correctness" dated Oct. 20.

Ms. Melly,

Mr. Mason is not alone in his assertion that female circumcision is barbaric. Most of the developed world (and that does not just mean "The West") would agree. The practice is condemned by both WHO and UNICEF. Your assertion that this is a practice which dates back centuries does not make it acceptable. The practice actually dates back to ancient Egypt, more than 4,000 years ago. Allow me to ask you some questions:

1. Do the young girls on whom this act is committed have a choice?

2. If so, are they old or mature enough to make a reasoned decision on the matter?

3. In your opinion, what percentage of women at the age of, say 25 to 30, would voluntarily agree to have this act performed on them?
