Commuter train claims first life

SURABAYA: The Surabaya commuter train, which started operating just last month, claimed its first life on Tuesday.

It struck a passerby on Jl. Achmad Yani in downtown Surabaya, the capital of East Java.

The victim was Munayah, 19.

Agus, an eyewitness, said Munayah alit from a public bus in front of Maspion Square on Jl. Achmad Yani and crossed the street. From there she went to cross the railway line and was struck by the train. She died upon impact.

The commuter train, the first in the city, was inaugurated by President Megawati Soekarnoputri. -- JP
