Community games, from sack races to Play Station

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Realizing that technological advancement has become part of the lives of children in his community, Pardiatmoko, a local community unit head in Parung Bingung, Depok, had a bright idea for the games held during Independence Day.

"I see children spending hours at a Play Station (video game) rental outlet here, and I thought, why not make it one of the games for the 17th," he said.

Placing the game on the list along with traditional kerupuk eating, karaoke and sack races has been well-received by the locals.

Pardiatmoko explained that the competition was aimed at children, but a number of older youths had already put their name down on the list of participants.

"We are going to rent the place for three hours this Sunday and choose the car racing game for the participants to compete in. Each round will determine a finalist with the fastest time who will join the final," he added, mentioning that the prize would not be much since the money was going to be spent for renting the Play Stations.

It seems that this Sunday, the community will be cheering in front of the TV screen.
