Committees for property rights bids
JAKARTA (JP): The government has set up two committees to examine appeals filed by applicants whose requests for patents and trademarks of their products have been rejected by the directorate general of intellectual property rights of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, an official said on Saturday.
Director-general of Intellectual Property Rights A. Zen Umar Purba said in a statement that the two committees were the Committee for Appeal on Patent Rights application and the Committee for Appeal on Trademark Rights application.
Purba said the two committees would start working since their members were installed by Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra earlier on Saturday.
"Their work is to observe the appeals filed by the applicants for patent rights and trademark rights and to review the decision by the directorate general of intellectual property rights which rejected their applications," Purba said in the statement, copies of which was made available to the media on Saturday.
The Committee for Appeal on Patent Rights applications is chaired by Wiranto Arismunandar, former minister of education and culture. He will be assisted by deputy chairman Goeswin Agoes and members: Soegijardjo Soegijoko, Tati Latifah E.R. Mengko, J.H. Simanjuntak and Ita Gambiro.
The Committee for Appeal on Trademark Rights is led by former justice J. Djohansjah, who will be assisted by deputy chairman H. Robinson Saragih and members: Agustiar Anwar, Wiratmo Dianggoro and Ismuantoro.
The establishment of both committees was stipulated in the Law No. 13/1997 on Patent Rights and the Law No. 14/1997 on Trademark.
The statement also announced that starting from Jan. 1, 2001, the public can submit their applications for copyrights, patent rights and trademarks to all regional offices of the directorate general.
The rights of the applicants will be automatically protected starting from the date they file their applications, Purba said.
He said the regional offices are also authorized to locally register the trademarks which have been registered overseas. (bby)
