Colonial crossfire
There were two letters regarding colonialism in The Jakarta Post on July 22, 1997. One was a well balanced view which put forth some of the benefits of colonialism. The second, unfortunately, was written with xenophobic and somewhat illogical views.
How Mr. Ronci can equate the evils of apartheid with the advent of modern day development that is vital for communications and commerce with the rest of the world is baffling.
In these days of global trade, the need for an international language is irrefutable. The fact that through the course of history it is English that has evolved as the most commonly spoken language is irrelevant.
Mr. Ronci conveniently ignores medical and technical achievements by these decadent invaders from the West that have made life healthier and easier for locals and expatriates alike.
I heard on BBC radio recently that in some parts of Africa the mean lifetime expectancy is eight years.
