Coca Cola responds

We appreciate the interest of Ted and Jea Henning (The Jakarta
Post, Dec. 2, 1994) in protecting the natural beauty of
Indonesia.

The Coca Cola system in Indonesia is in the process of
switching to stay-on tabs for can packages. It was only very
recently that the technology to manufacture such packages became
available in this country. Now that it is available, we can
assure Ted and Jea Henning that such can packages will enter the
Indonesia market very shortly. In fact, Coca Cola will lead all
local beverage manufacturers in launching this environmentally-
friendly packaging.

The Coca Cola system in Indonesia is mindful of environmental
issues and in recent years has undertaken a number of initiatives
which are playing an important role in protecting the
environment.

For example, in the very important area of waste water
treatment, the facilities at Coca Cola bottling plants in
Indonesia are among the most sophisticated in the world. We have
worked with the manufacturers of waste water treatment equipment
to help them upgrade their products to world-class standards. A
recent article in this newspaper (The Jakarta Post, Nov. 15,
1994) detailed the significant achievements that have been
attained in this area of environment protection.

We extend a warm invitation to Ted and Jea Henning to visit
Coca-Cola canning facility next time they are in Indonesia, to
see for themselves the very extensive and progressive work being
done by the soft drinks industry in this country to help protect
the environment.
