Coaches argue scoring system

JAKARTA (JP): Two coaches from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), Indra Gunawan of Indonesia and Park Joo-bong of South Korea, are at odds over what scoring system should be used at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur in September.

Berita Harian reported on Wednesday that Indra, BAM men's singles consultant, urged the Games' organizers to apply the new best-of-five scoring system, with seven-point games. He said Malaysian shuttlers had performed well under this system.

Roslin Hashim and Lee Tsuen Seng set up an all-Malaysian final at the Swiss Open, which used this scoring system.

But Park, the men's doubles coach, wants the old best-of-three scoring system, with games lasting 15 points.

The decision is expected to be made this week.

There are seven gold medals on offer in badminton at the biennial event from Sept. 8 to Sept. 17. (yan)
