Clinton's best way out
Americans ought to be disturbed by the decision to release the videotape (of President Bill Clinton's grand jury testimony) because it challenges long-standing secrecy rules for witnesses at grand jury proceedings.
Mr. Clinton could choose to harness public sympathy and fight back. But the big question for him should not be what he could do to his opponents, but what he could accomplish for the United States -- and the world -- if he clings to office. The sad conclusion is that Mr. Clinton is likely to be increasingly distracted by his personal battle, and that matters of state will fall by the wayside.
For a man who values his place in history, the best way out should be a quick, dignified exit.
