Classical music comes to 'TOP FM'

JAKARTA (JP): A new sound is coming to Jakarta, beginning on Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. on TOP FM radio (89.7), says Charles Dean Conrad, the radio's programing advisor.

The music of Bach, Beethoven, Handel and other great composers will be heard each evening from 6 p.m. until midnight. These sounds will emanate from TOP FM radio's new programing service -- Radio Klasik, he said.

"Radio Klasik is designed to bring classical music and the fine arts to Jakarta and surrounding areas on FM Radio," Conrad said in a press release.

As part of that objective, Radio Klasik will provide free announcements for non-profit cultural organizations about their scheduled cultural events, he said.

In addition, Radio Klasik plans to record concerts in Jakarta by various groups for replay at a later date. These concerts could possibly include the Jakarta Youth Orchestra, the Nusantara Orchestra and visiting professional groups sponsored by cultural and diplomatic organizations.

Radio Klasik will also explore the possibility of broadcasting concerts by internationally-recognized orchestras, as recorded by other radio stations throughout the world. A nine-concert series from Radio Australia has been scheduled for October, November and December. It is hoped that additional concerts from the BBC, Radio France and the Salzburg Festival will also be made available to Jakarta listeners. (hhr)
