Civil servants still awaiting pay

MAUMERE, East Nusa Tenggara (JP): Hundreds of civil servants in the province have yet to get their pay following a clash on Nov. 5 which led to many people fleeing their homes, including administration cashiers.

Pos Kupang daily Monday was referring to the bloodshed that resulted in at least 23 deaths in Waikabubak, West Sumba, and also 125 homes being damaged or burned. Hundreds were left homeless.

The head of the education agency here, Umbu Nuku, promised the employees' and teachers' wages would be paid as soon as possible.

Teachers have complained that grocery prices had increased even more since the riot. The riot was reportedly triggered by the alleged rigging of civil servant recruitment. (yac)
