City to renovate traditional markets

JAKARTA: City market operator PD Pasar Jaya plans to renovate 12 traditional markets in Jakarta to provide better services for visitors as well as vendors.

The Blora, Cipinang, Sawah Besar, Petojo, Serdang, Kawi-Kawi, Ciplak, Palmerah, Kedurenan, Barito and Cipinang Besar traditional markets are scheduled for renovation.

"We want to make them like the Tanah Abang market, which has ground-level parking," said Pasar Jaya president director Prabowo Sunirman.

Prabowo said Pasar Jaya would provide temporary space for vendors affected by the renovation work, which will be funded with the city budget.

Once the markets are renovated, kiosk rental fees will range between Rp 500,000 (US$55) and Rp 600,000 per square meter, per month. -- JP
