City to renovate 19 old markets

JAKARTA: City market operator PD Pasar Jaya plans to renovate 19 traditional markets across Jakarta this year.

"We will gradually renovate the markets for consumers' convenience ... we will reorganize the zoning of the markets, so the clothing shops are no longer near the fishmongers," company spokesman Nurman Adhi said.

The traditional markets included in the project are, among others: Kawi Sentiong and Pal Meriam in Central Jakarta, Cibubur in East Jakarta and Ciplak in Bekasi.

Nurman said that nearly 60 percent of the existing 151 traditional markets are in poor condition.

"Without renovation, consumers will turn to mini markets and department stores," he added.

He said the company had often held meetings with the traders to familiarize them with the plan. -- Antara
