City to offer early retirement package

JAKARTA: Vice Governor Fauzi Bowo said that the city administration was considering cutting its staff from 96,000 employees to 75,000 by offering early retirement along with additional compensation for some 20,000 employees.

Fauzi said that there were too many employees at the city administration and those reaching the age of retirement, about 1,500 people per year, would not significantly reduce the number of staff.

"Therefore, we will try to offer an early retirement package with additional compensation as an incentive," Fauzi told the media on Monday.

City Hall spokesman Muhayat said that the employees who would be offered an early retirement were those who had been working for at least 20 years and who were at least 50 years of age.

Muhayat, however, stressed that further discussion was needed before the plan was implemented. Muhayat was also unsure when it could be implemented.--JP
