City stops collecting levies
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration stopped collecting 22 levies on 31 different types of municipality service as of May 23.
The decision was taken in line with Jakarta Governor's Decree No. 134/1998 and Law No. 18/1997 on the collection of local taxes and levies.
The abolished levies include fees charged for civil registration, disturbance regulation, citizenship, fire, sanitation, funeral services and sidewalk businesses.
The decree also states that city residents should only be subject to a fee of Rp 1,000 to process identification cards.
When asked what the impact of the move on city revenues would be, City Hall spokesman Kamaludin S. refused to comment.
However, Governor Sutiyoso said in March that locally generated revenues in the 1998/1999 fiscal year were expected to fall 15.86 percent to Rp 1.72 trillion. Before the monetary crisis broke, an estimated Rp 2.03 trillion was expected to be raised from local levies. (ivy)
