City starts ID card sweep
A joint team from the city administration raided on Monday 1,343
people in the city as part of its planned ID card sweep targeting
new migrants, who arrived after the Idul Fitri celebrations.
An official at the City Population Agency revealed that almost
none of the people investigated during the raids possessed the
required documentation, such as a letter of explanation from
authorized officials from their hometowns.
Head of the supervision and controlling division at the City
Population Agency Rismansjah said that the majority of people
were raided in West Jakarta (594 people), followed by North
Jakarta (325), South Jakarta (186), Central Jakarta (124), and
East Jakarta (114).
"The operation will continue after Christmas and New Year as
we still believe that more new people will come to the city,"
Rismansjah told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
Of the 1,343 people questioned by city public order officers
during the raids, 421 were found guilty of violating city
population regulations.
The others were released after they were found to have Jakarta
IDs or were just temporary visitors.
Based on data from the City Population Agency, as many as
231,528 newcomers arrived in the city following the Idul Fitri
celebrations. --JP
