City Police get new homes

JAKARTA (JP): National Police Chief Lt. Gen. Dibyo Widodo inaugurated new apartments for City Police officers yesterday in Jatipetamburan, West Jakarta.

Dibyo said the apartments can accommodate 203 families and 288 single officers. The new homes were in the Kalideres and Jati Petamburan districts of West Jakarta. He also inaugurated new police apartments in the Pasar Minggu and Cileduk districts of South Jakarta.

"Lack of proper housing has caused many officers to live in poor quality police complexes or rent houses in faraway suburban areas," Dibyo said.

A source from the City Police Logistics Department said around 50 percent of 17,000 officers at City Police Headquarters still need proper housing.

Single officers get half-furnished, 17.5-square-meter bedrooms.

Dibyo said he hoped the new homes could help improve officers' welfare as well as boost their work ethic.

"The project costed around Rp 17 billion (US$7 million)," Dibyo said.

In November last year, apartments for 96 families in Kalideres and Jatipetamburan had already been inaugurated.

Around 200 apartments are 38-square-meters, 60 units are 54- square-meters, and the remaining units are 70-square-meters.

Contractors were PT Rama Adyasari, PT Kasmiran Indah, PT Prima Karya Abadi and two others. (cst)
