City eyes Cikelor as alternative dump

JAKARTA: The administration is looking into the possibility of dispose of its waste in Cikelor subdistrict, Karawang regency, West Java, some 70 kilometers to the east of the capital, amid a lingering dispute with residents of Bojong in Bogor, West Java, over the use of a waste treatment facility in their village.

An official with the Jakarta Environment Management Agency (BPLHD), Vera Revina Sari, revealed that the city planning agency was studying an alternative site for the Bojong waste treatment plant.

"We remain open to alternatives, including the use of Cikelor dump," Vera said.

The owner of this dump, PT Cikelor Mandiri, had offered the administration 74 hectares of land as an alternative dump for the capital. The company would also transport the garbage between Jakarta and Cikelor.

The company would charge the administration a tipping fee of Rp 53,000 per ton of garbage. --JP.
