Citibank aids famine victims

JAKARTA (JP): Citibank Indonesia's employees have raised a total of Rp 79.56 million to help famine victims in drought-hit Irian Jaya province.

The funds will be converted into three months' worth of food supplies for 400 children in seven villages, the bank said yesterday.

"The funds were raised by Citibankers who care about the effects of the famine in Irian Jaya and its impact on the health of children there," said Ditta Amahorseya, Citibank Indonesia's head of corporate affairs.

The famine resulted from the drought caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon.

The food aid is being disbursed by World Vision Indonesia, a nonprofit organization active in providing health and education- related aid to Irian Jaya. (08)
