Cisadane fiesta opens Saturday

TANGERANG, Banten (JP): The annual Cisadane Festival, which opens here on Saturday, will present an assortment of traditional art performances and competitions for residents of Tangerang.

Speaking to Antara, E. Kusnawan, the deputy chairman of the organizing committee, described the one-week event as a people's festival, adding that organizers hoped to attract as much participation from residents as the previous year.

The highlight of the festival will be a boat race along the Cisadane River involving representatives from every subdistrict in Tangerang, as well as participants from outside the town.

There will also be duck hunting, dragon boat races and traditional boat races on the river.

Other attractions will be a tanjidor orchestra, the rampak gendang, the barongsai (lion dance) and a gambus orchestra.

The festival was canceled in 1998 and 1999 because of the economic and political situation in the country. (04)
