1945 : Establishment of "Nuremberg Tribunal" to try alleged

Nazi war criminals

1946 : Establishment of the "Tokyo Tribunal" to prosecute

Japanese war criminals

1947 : The UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment

of the Crime of Genocide

1949-1954 : The drafting of the ICC Statute by the International

Law Commission (ILC)

1989 : UN asks ILC to resume work on ICC

1993 : UN Security Council establishes the ad hoc

International Criminal Tribunal for the Former

Yugoslavia

1994 : The ILC completes work on ICC draft statute; UN

General Assembly establishes Ad Hoc Committee on the

Establishment of an ICC

1995 : UN establishes Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) to

finalize text

1998 : (April) PrepCom completes finalized draft text of

Rome Statute

1998 : (July 17) Rome Statute is adopted by 120 countries at

Diplomatic Conference in Rome

2002 : (April 11) 60th ratification deposited

2002 : (July 1) The Rome Statute enters into force

2002 : (July 12) First meeting of ICC Assembly of States

2003 : (February) Election of ICC Judges

2003 : (March 11) Inauguration of the ICC and swearing-in of

the judges

2003 : (June 16) Swearing-in of the Prosecutor

2003 : (September 12) Members of the Board of Directors of

the Trust Fund are elected by the Assembly of States

2004 : (January 29) The Prosecutor announces Uganda has made

the first referral by a State Party
