China to boost tourists to Bali

DENPASAR, Bali: The Chinese government has pledged to increase cooperation in tourism with Bali, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Lan Lijun said after meeting with an official from Denpasar municipality, I Made Westra.

Westra briefed the Chinese envoy on Friday about the province's security measures, Antara reported. Lan was invited by the Bali provincial authorities to attend the opening of the Bali Arts Festival by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Saturday.

"I believe that in the future, the Chinese tourists will increase their trips to Bali, particularly to Denpasar, because the authority here (in Bali province) have given enough attention to the safety of visitors," Lan was quoted as saying by Antara.

"We feel that the atmosphere in Bali, including the security, is no different with China," he said, adding that Bali is one of favored destinations for Chinese tourists.

Lan, who visited Bali for the first time since he was appointed ambassador this year, said he was impressed by the Balinese hospitality and culture.

According to the Denpasar tourism agency, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Bali from January to April, particularly those who stay in Denpasar, was only 78 persons.

Westra did not say whether security was the major concern for the low numbers, but he claimed that all Balinese were committed to keep their island safe and secure.

"Though there are local election campaigns, Bali is still good for traveling... Moreover, almost 60 percent of Balinese earn their living from tourism, which makes up the majority of Bali's revenue," he said. -- JP
