Chevrolet not to up prices

MEDAN, North Sumatra: PT General Motors Indonesia President Director Harold Koh said on Wednesday that the company would not increase its prices, following the government's decision to increase fuel prices on March 1.

He said so far the fuel price hike had not had a significant impact on the production cost of Chevrolet cars, which are manufactured in its manufacturing unit in Bekasi.

Although Chevrolet sold around 4,000 cars last year -- company data said the sales were mainly attributed to the Aveo and Spark -- Koh said the company had yet to set its sales target for this year.

Both Aveo and Spark compact cars are sold at competitive prices at Rp 128 million (US$13,653) and Rp 80 million respectively.

The Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo) has estimated that this year's car sales will be at around 530,000, an increase from last year's 483,417 units. -- JP
