Chess coverage

First of all I would like to express my high esteem for your newspaper, The Jakarta Post. I feel sufficiently well informed, just the amount that I can manage to read nearly every day.

I also appreciate your chess coverage (as now for example on the encounter of Karpov and Kamsky). Chess is not that well covered in many other daily newspapers, especially those from my own country, Germany. I also like the chess quiz, congratulations to Shelby Lyman. The quiz is generally not difficult and provides a lot of fun.

Perhaps I could contribute to one of the next Chess quizzes? The following position recently emerged in an encounter against my friend Pak Aladin. Black is to move and mates in 4.

Aladin - E. Krain (May, 19996, Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan)

White: Ka4, a5, b4, g4, h3

Black: Kc4, Bd4, a6, b7, g5, h6

This quiz is very simple, but has its own beauty. It is based on a Zugzwang (a German terminus technicus which is used in a number of languages, e.g. in English and Russian) with mate- motif.

Solution: 1 ... Bb2! 2. h4gxh4 3. g5hxg5 4. b5 axb5 mate.

EBERHARD KRAIN

Note: Thank you for your offer, but we have signed a contract for the use of Shelby Lyman's quiz. Editor.
