Cheating teacher jailed

MEDAN, North Sumatra: The district court sentenced a 40-year- old elementary school to two years in prison yesterday for swindling 10 million (US$4,270) from a job seeker in February.

Presiding Judge Bahauddin Qaudry said in his verdict that Salmah Madjid was guilty of cheating Sumanto of cash, promising to get her a job at Bank Indonesia.

"The defendant failed to find the plaintiff a job at the Medan branch of BI (Bank Indonesia)" Bahauddin said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Prosecutor D.H. Pasaribu had sought a 25-month sentence for the teacher.

Bahauddin said the plaintiff was lured by Salmah's promise of a good position at the bank for Rp 10 million in grease money. The bribe was to be transferred to a Jakarta official. (pan)
