Champions All...3

* Navratilova and Steffi Graf's dominance of Wimbledon in the last 15 years is evident by the fact that Conchita Martinez's win in 1994 was the first time since Chris Evert's triumph in 1981 that another player had taken the title.

* Who has the most consistent record at Wimbledon in the modern era? The answer is not Martina Navratilova or Billie Jean King, but Chris Evert who reached the semifinals or better in every year she played except one. The baseliner played at Wimbledon 17 times; she won 3 times, lost in the final 7 times, and was a semifinalist 6 times.

* The only blemish on her record is a third round loss in 1983 when she was suffering from an acute case of food poisoning. Evert had eaten her usual steak and salad dinner the previous evening, but the next morning she began vomiting. It was too late to ask for the match to be rescheduled because the order of play had already been published.

* Evert had the misfortune to face aggressive serve and volleyer Kathy Jordan that day. Jordan played inspired tennis but Evert fought bravely to take the second set into a tiebreaker. Jordan came through, however, to complete one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history.

* Evert showed her champion's mettle in 1989, her last Wimbledon appearance. Italian Laura Golarsa, attempting to become the first Italian woman to reach the Wimbledon semifinals, led Evert by 5- 2, 40-15, two match points on her service, in the final set. Golarsa served to Evert's forehand and the American smacked the ball for a winner down the line. Evert saved the next point, broke Golarsa's service and then won four games in a row for the match.
