Census of street traders planned

The city administration will soon hold a census of street traders in order to get accurate data on the number of people doing business in this informal sector.

Kasirin, a subdivision head at the City Population Office, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday that discussions are now underway among his office, the coordinating agency for the development of informal sector, the city bureau for maintaining public order and other related city agencies in order to formulate the best approach for the census.

Kasirin said the census will be done by a private company.

Jakarta has seen a substantial increase in the number of street traders during this ongoing dry season due to the arrival of a large number of seasonal migrants from other provinces. (arf)
