Cement truck kills 2 motorcyclists

JAKARTA (JP): Two men riding a motor scooter were killed when a speeding cement truck crashed into them at a crowded intersection in Central Jakarta yesterday evening.

The two victims were thrown free on impact but their scooter was dragged underneath the truck, which hit seven other vehicles waiting at traffic lights.

Realizing the magnitude of their actions, the truck driver and his assistant abandoned their vehicle, with the license plate number B9837 IZ, and fled.

The victims, who died instantly, were identified as Achmad, 31, of West Pancoran in South Jakarta and Gerrit E. Uneputi, whose identity was still unclear.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Jl. Kebon Sirih, Jl. Prapatan, Jl. Haji Ridwan Rais and Jl. Menteng Raya.

"The truck driver and his assistant are still at large," a Menteng Police officer, who did not want to be named, said.

It was believed the truck was heading to a nearby construction site. (07/04)
