Cellular phone robber shot dead

JAKARTA (JP): A cellular phone robber was shot dead in front of Senen shopping center on Jl. Senen Raya in Central Jakarta while attempting to escape arrest on Thursday morning.

Central Jakarta police chief of detectives Comr. Angesta Romano Yoyol said Yanto Tanjung, 25, a resident of Jl. Abdul Ghani, Cempaka Putih district of Central Jakarta grabbed a cellular phone hanging from the hip of Doni Djohar, 27, a resident of Jl. Program III, Cimanggis, Depok, West Java at a bus stop on Jl. Senen Raya.

Doni then cried for help and coincidentally, Central Jakarta police officer First. Brig. Slamet who was patrolling the area was able to come to his assistance. Slamet pursued and caught the thief, Yanto.

Yoyol said as Slamet was about to handcuff Yanto, Yanto escaped prompting the police officer to shoot him in the back and leg after he ignored warning shots.

According to Yoyol, Yanto, who allegedly had frequently robbed commuters in the Senen area, died instantly. His body was sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.(01)
