Celebrating India's independence day
I am writing in reference to the article (March 6) on India's Independence day celebrations on Feb. 22, 1997 at Erasmus Huis, Jakarta.
The article overlooked a number of important details of the program and did not include the main idea and theme behind the celebrations.
At the outset the function was organized to celebrate India's "Golden Jubilee" year of independence. His excellency the Ambassador of India attended the function and lauded the India Club's initiative in organizing such a program and said that many more such programs were being organized to celebrate India's 50th Year of Independence. The article failed to mention that the program was titled A tribute to our motherland and it was aimed at bringing out the cultures of various regions rather than just being a dance performance.
It was surprising that "India Club" which had arranged this program was given only a passing reference while the main organizer of the program was not even referred to. Needless to say, such articles not only miss out on the essence of the program but also distort the main theme behind it.
It would only be befitting if such articles are written in consultation with the organizers to bring out the salient features of the program.
