Celebrating Idul Fitri

Millions of Muslims throughout the country gathered for prayers and family reunions on Tuesday to celebrate Idul Fitri, the end the holy month of Ramadhan.

The holiday, which began on Monday evening, was marked by the breaking of the fast for the last time this Ramadhan.

As is tradition, revelers in the capital Jakarta and other major cities climbed aboard trucks, minibuses and motorcycles for a noisy parade through the streets on Monday night.

Youngsters banged drums and shouted Allahu Akbar (God is Great) during the parade, as these same words echoed from the city's mosques.

The capital, which is ordinarily chaotic, was noticeably quiet and free of traffic on Tuesday, with many residents having left the city by car, bus, train or ferry to celebrate the holiday with family back in their hometowns.
