Cassette plant accused of pollution

JAKARTA (JP): Residents in the Duri Kosambi district of West Jakarta are complaining again about the air pollution which they say stems from a nearby cassette factory.

The residents have repeatedly raised complaints with the management of the plant, PT BASF, since 1993.

The residents allege that chemical substances in the air are causing respiratory problems, including asthma.

Ignored complaints in 1993 led them to break down a fence around the factory.

The people have given the company two alternatives: either move the factory or the pay compensation to help relocate the residents.

Media Indonesia reported yesterday that the management of the company, which is a joint-venture between German and local businesses, promised to study the complaints and respond this month. The management was not available for comment. (kod)
