Candlelight vigil to light up Jakarta

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

In the observance of Antiviolence Day, which fell on May 12, a rally and candle light festival will be held on Sunday evening along the slow lane of the northbound side of Jl. Jend. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin.

The entire event will take place between 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The candle light festival will take the route from the Pemuda Statue traffic circle at Senayan, Central Jakarta, more popularly known as the Pizza Man roundabout, to the National Monument (Monas) park.

The rally will start from a point in front of the BRI building on Jl. Jend. Sudirman, close to the Semanggi cloverleaf, and will end six-kilometers away at Monas park.

Cultural and artistic performances will also highlight the evening.

Head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency Rustam Effendy advised motorists traveling from Monas toward Jl. Sisingamangaraja to take an alternative route to avoid the rally.

However, he said, motorists could also still use other lanes of the main thoroughfare.

"The event will not disrupt the busway," he said in a statement made available on Friday.

Rustam added that his officers would help to control traffic during the event.
