Candidates for vice governors
JAKARTA (JP): The City Council's plenary meeting yesterday approved the nomination of Central Jakarta Mayor Abdul Kahfi and Djaelani, an assistant to a state minister, as deputy governors for administrative affairs and welfare affairs respectively.
Council speaker Edy Waluyo said after the meeting that the decision was also made based on a letter of recommendation from the governor to the minister of home affairs and similar written support from the Armed Forces chief.
Kahfi, 55, is a 1966 graduate of the military academy and a brigadier general.
Djaelani, 51, a major general, is currently an assistant to State Minister of Population/Chairman of the National Family Planning Board Haryono Suyono. He earned a medical degree from the University of Indonesia in 1966.
Kahfi will replace Idroes, who is to join the House of Representatives and Djaelani replaces R.S Museno, who has just retired.
It remains unclear who will be appointed the new Central Jakarta mayor.
According to spokesman Edy, yesterday's approval will be submitted to the governor, who will then present it to the President, via the minister of home affairs, for final approval.
If everything proceeds smoothly, Kahfi and Djaelani will be installed before the new governor on Oct. 6. (jun)
