Canada, NZ send relief aid

JAKARTA: The New Zealand and Canadian governments have extended NZ$50,000 (Rp 63 million) and Rp 45 million worth of aid relief respectively for the victims of the recent tidal waves in East Java.

The disaster left over 200 people dead and extensive damage to residents' property and public facilities in the worst stricken district of Banyuwangi.

The New Zealand embassy said the contribution channeled through the UN Department of Humanitarian Affairs would fund purchases of relief supplies to provide immediate food and shelter needs for 1,500 families.

The Canadian embassy said its aid relief come from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives aimed at community development in the stricken areas. (pan)
