Canada consulate open in Surabaya

SURABAYA, East Java: Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien has appointed Alim Markus, president of an Indonesian plastic goods manufacturer, an honorary Canadian consul in Surabaya.

Antara, quoting a Canadian Embassy press statement, reported that Alim will be inducted by Ambassador Lawrence T. Dickenson on July 1 here.

Dickenson said the appointment is expected to boost trade relations between the two countries, as well as promote Canadian investment in the province.

The ambassador said that the relation will be mutually beneficial because of the strength of each party. Local trade and industries are already bustling, while Canada can offer its technology and global-scale investment.(imn)
