Call to consumers

People in Indonesia, powerless consumers, are routinely victimized by fraudulent merchants. Consumers here will get a fair deal only if, and when, they stand up and demand basic rights -- hold the merchants accountable for fraudulent actions.

Recently I entered the stylish-looking Calvin Klein store located at Plaza Indonesia. Hanging in the window was a very large sign advertising "20 percent discount on all merchandise". After selecting several times and proceeding to the cashier, I was told that the items which I had selected were not included in the sale (even though the store did not have any disclaimer excluding any items). Needless to say, I was furious. I immediately complained to the store manager, but of course it did not help, since I was merely a powerless consumer. Losing me and my purchase meant absolutely nothing to the staff at the Calvin Klein store.

As an expatriate, I have an alternative: make expensive purchases overseas where I am assured of basic satisfaction in terms of product quality, service, advertising, etc. However, this does nothing to help the plight of powerless consumers here. Come on, consumers, stand up and demand basic rights from merchants -- hold them accountable!
