Cadets must live in simplicity

MAGELANG, Central Java: Military Academy Governor Maj. Gen. Syamsul Ma'arif has asked parents of his cadets not to send their children too much money during their studies.

The academy rules restrict each student's monthly allowance to a maximum of Rp180,000 (US$26) in order to scrap socioeconomic gaps between the students.

Syamsul told Antara over the weekend parents would risk spoiling the cadets' opportunities to become respected officers if they allowed their sons and daughters to maintain extravagant lifestyles.

A regular examination will be conducted on the cadets' bank accounts. Cadets who keep Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards are obliged to report any cash withdrawals they make.

Syamsul also said that in the reform era the academy will change the curriculum. The academy has increased the time allotted for human rights subjects. (04)
