C. Java to send full team to c'ship

SEMARANG (JP): The Central Java chapter of the Indonesian Taekwondo Association will send a full team to the LG Cup National Taekwondo Championship in Jakarta in early February, an official said on Friday.

"We will send as many taekwondoins as possible to the championship, but the backbone of the team will be those who competed in the 2000 National Games in Surabaya," coach Bambang Wijanarko said here.

"We will soon summon them to join the training center in preparation for the championship."

The taekwondoins scheduled to compete are Amalia, Derry Darmansyah, Inosensius, Regina Maya, Veronika Widyarini, Vinca Maharsih, Wiwis Widiowati and Yoga Pradana.

The championship is also seen as a benchmark to determine the national team for the 2001 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur.

"We expect to have more Central Java fighters in the national training center. So far we have placed two fighters there -- Derry and Wiwis," said Bambang. "Derry is a talented fighter and I'm sure he has a chance to grab a gold medal in Kuala Lumpur."

Derry won a gold medal in the men's bantamweight class at the Southeast Asian Taekwondo Union Championship in Vietnam, while Wiwis took gold in the National Games. (nvn)
