C. Java districts could merge

SEMARANG, Central Java: As many as 10 districts in Central
Java could be merged under a new law on regional autonomy.

The districts of Pekalongan, Semarang, Cilacap, Rembang,
Grobogan, Karanganyar, Magelang, Salatiga, Wonosobo and Purworejo
could be merged with other districts under Law No 22/1999,
Turtiantoro, head of the Center for the Assessment of Regional
Autonomy and Public Policy of the social and political sciences
department of Diponegoro University, said here on Friday.

The districts were recently assessed for such a merger based
on their financial capabilities and organization, administration
and demographic criteria, he said, as quoted by Antara.

Central Java currently has 35 districts. (mds)
