C. Java districts could merge

SEMARANG, Central Java: As many as 10 districts in Central Java could be merged under a new law on regional autonomy.

The districts of Pekalongan, Semarang, Cilacap, Rembang, Grobogan, Karanganyar, Magelang, Salatiga, Wonosobo and Purworejo could be merged with other districts under Law No 22/1999, Turtiantoro, head of the Center for the Assessment of Regional Autonomy and Public Policy of the social and political sciences department of Diponegoro University, said here on Friday.

The districts were recently assessed for such a merger based on their financial capabilities and organization, administration and demographic criteria, he said, as quoted by Antara.

Central Java currently has 35 districts. (mds)
