C. Jakarta council starts to work

JAKARTA: The subdistrict Central Jakarta municipal council has begun its role monitoring the work of the Central Jakarta's office, a spokesman says.

Council secretary Tihang Helmi said the local body was involved in the recent evictions of illegal squatters in the Bongkaran area, Tanah Abang.

"Later this month, the council will meet the representatives of all 44 subdistrict councils to disseminate information about the (Central Jakarta) administration's policies," he told the city's official online news portal Beritajakarta.com.

The establishment of municipality council is regulated in Law No. 22 and No. 34, both issued in 1999, on regional autonomy. The council's main task is to work with the central administration in implementing policies. -- JP
