C. Jakarta clears sidewalks of vendors

JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta municipality has carried out a mass clearance of hundreds of illegal stalls belonging to street vendors across prime areas in the municipality during the Idul Fitri holiday.

"As of today, we have collected 28 truckloads of stall debris from several locations, namely Kebon Jati, Kebon Kacang, Tanah Abang and Senen," Central Jakarta Mayor Muhayat said on Thursday.

Muhayat said that the sweep was made during the holidays to avoid violent clashes between the public order officers and evicted vendors.

"We had informed the street vendors to tear down their stalls ahead of the holiday, otherwise, we said we would bulldoze the stalls," he claimed. --JP
