Bus driver jailed for 30 months

The North Jakarta District Court yesterday sentenced a Mayasari Bhakti city bus driver to two-and-a-half years in jail for hitting a motorcycle driver and his friend, both of whom were killed.

Two years ago, the 38 year old Oon Syahroni, alias A. Basir, was driving his bus at high speeds on Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan, Kelapa Gading, in North Jakarta on Nov. 1 when he hit Jasias Rio, 16, and Donald Sumardjo, 15, who were making a u-turn.

The court said the victims along with the motorcycle were dragged by the bus 10 meters away before it stopped.

Donald died at the scene while Rio died later at the nearby hospital.

After the accident, the driver of the Tanah Abang-Pulo Gadung bus route fled the scene. He was arrested 18 months later in Jakarta. (bsr)
