Burglary of BCA ATM leaves Rp 460m in losses

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

A Bank Central Asia (BCA) Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) at a Indomaret mini-market at Jatimulya housing complex, Bekasi municipality, was burglarized, causing Rp 460 million (US$54,762) in losses to the country's third largest bank.

BCA official Chaerudin has filed a report with the Bekasi Police.

He said an operator from BCA headquarters asked a security guard around 2 a.m. to check the ATM after detecting irregularities in the machine via the bank's network system.

"Nothing looked out of place, but we found out later that the ATM had been broken into," he said.

Chaerudin believed the burglar knew the security code to unlock the ATM, so was able to steal the cash without vandalizing the machine.

Bekasi Police chief of detectives Comr. Hendro Pandowo said officers had questioned two employees of PT Trans National Indosin, a private company that refills ATMs with cash.

"We have grilled the two witnesses, Dodi and Prayogo, and will check with the BCA official who reported the case and the operator at BCA headquarters who first noticed the irregularity," he said.
