'Bumiku Satu' teaches environmental lesson

JAKARTA (JP): Private TV station RCTI begun a four-part educational series, Bumiku Satu (My Only Earth), on the importance of environmental conservation yesterday.

Scheduled for broadcast at 4:30 p.m. on consecutive Sundays, the series is produced by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and explores themes of water, air, energy and the forest and biodiversity.

WWF said in a statement the series was a pilot project for TV as an alternative medium to increase public awareness on the environment.

"The program also hopes to make up for the lack of education on the environment in the school curriculum," a WWF release said.

One of the episodes, Air (Water), won the Festival Sinetron Indonesia award in the nonfiction category for educative and informative programs.

After evaluating viewer response to the first four parts, WWF plans to produce 26 more episodes. (ste)
